I was asked...."What brings you joy..."

During my time this Fall 2009 at the IMS Forest Refuge and Retreat Center, I had plenty of occasions to watch my own mind generate suffering in myriad ways. At a certain point in the retreat (5 weeks in to be more precise) my body basically "refused" to sit. As a result, I experienced intense vertigo. I could literally not "sit" without feeling as if I was either off the ground, upside down or in need of grabbing a wall to prevent a fall. I was nauseous and miserable.
One of my teachers suggesting that my practice was 'out of balance' and suggested that I stop sitting and start doing things that bring me pleasure and joy. In addition to long walks in the forest, I found my way to my pencils and sketch book, and below I share a few of the fruits of that joyfilled time, retreating from 'the retreat' as I'd known it and taking to heart the Buddha's teachings of the Seven Factors of Awakening, one of which is of course, joy.

This Buddha statue of wood sits in Joseph Goldstein's office. It was a delight
to slip in there daily after lunch and feel the effects of so many years and so
many lives of such dedication to the Dharma. Thank you to each and every one of
the IMS Bohdisatvas for your lives of service.

Happy in January 2010

Hello dear ones!

I'm back on Bay area soil, living in the Noe/Castro and happy happy happy to be done "retreating". It was a looooonnnnnnnngggg time to be in silence and away from the world, and it will be a looooonnnngggg time before I undertake a retreat of any length again, if ever. Really.

I'm opening a lovely SF office for my somatic work starting Feb 1st, and will be actively interviewing men who have mindfulness practices for the next two months. I love the prospect of sitting with amazing men and and their inquiries into what it means to bring mindfulness practices into sexual relations with self and others. If you are interested in being interviewed, drop me a line describing your practice and your reasons for wanting to participate in this research, and I'll be in touch lickety split.

In the meantime, I have numerous pictures and drawings to post in my gallery, which I'll start tonight and see where it all goes before I pull down the lids on my eyes and count my blessings.

G'nite,
Lisa

Lisa's Itinerary for Fall 2009

Hello curious ones,

I'm leaving the Bay Area for personal retreat and will be in Barre, MA from Aug 1-Sept 1 sitting and serving in the Forest Monk tradition. I will not be in phone or email contact, and will check messages after Sept 1st.

I will then have the month of Sept to travel, study or continue in retreat... stay tuned.

By Oct 6th I head to England to live at Amaravati Monastery, where I'll continue my studies and practice in service with the nuns of the Forest Monk tradition.

I have good intentions to update my blog when I do occassionally get online between retreats etc, and if you want to communicate with me, use my lisa@artofsomatics.com address and be patient. I'll get back to you when I can.

Portrait of Lorissa

Graphite on bristol paper. I enjoyed this perspective of standing over and off to the side of our model for this somewhat voyeristic peek into her suchness. I am challenging myself to go beyond the portrait and include more of the body and or the setting.
